Blast From The Past Polish: OPI "Pistol Packin' Pink" (Wild West Collection)

Sometimes, nail polish is not just nail polish. Sometimes it is a plethora of memories crammed into a bottle.  This is the case with the polish I'm wearing today: OPI's "Pistol Packin' Pink" from the Wild West Collection that came out in 1999.  Why does this color hold such a spot in my heart?  In 1999, I was a new nail tech working in a salon for the very first time. This was one of the first collections that was out then, and I loved this color. At the time, I knew very little about OPI, or their silly color names or anything like that.  I just knew that I loved pink neutrals (hmm, not much has changed) and this one was great.  I can remember putting this on one of my first real clients ("real", meaning- she would actually come in every other Saturday to have me fill and paint her nails).  I know that I sucked back then, yet she still came back week after week. She took pity on me and gave me practice :) She stuck it out with me and eventually I got better. She helped make me the nail person I am today!  I remember my Mom loving the color on me and I bought it for her too.  I can picture myself at our kitchen table, doing her nails.

So, the sad part of the story- I didn't just have this color, sitting in the back of a drawer waiting for me to use her again.  No, dear friends, I used to THROW AWAY my old nail polishes! I cringe at the thought of what I threw (or in some cases gave) away! (I've told some of you in my FB group, I gave away OPI Mad As A Hatter and Absolutely Alice!).  Imagine my utter surprise when my friend Jen (aka, The Polished Zombie) found this on a "dusty hunt" and sent it to me!  I yelled when I opened it, for realz.

A real, genuine "old time" OPI:

Black label!

Here she is on! I used about 3ish layers here.  It is funny to be using an OPI with a skinny brush instead of the "pro wide" one they use today. Pistol Packin' Pink is a creamy pink with a shimmer running through it:

The other colors in this collection were:
 Wild West Berry
Boot Hill-a Vanilla
 Balin' Hay In Santa Fe
Wyatt Earple Purple
 Home On The O-range
 Howdy Honey!
 Back In The Saddle
 Rodeo Rose
Gold Rush Blush
Head 'Em Up Mauve 'Em Out
 and Wanted...Red Or Alive
Part of me really wants to try and find as many of these as possible now and reunite this set (mainly because, back then, I didn't appreciate certain colors for the awesomeness they possessed. I'd love to see if my thoughts have change over the years).

Thank you so much Jen for giving me this piece of nail nostalgia <3 It means so much to me!

  1. She looks GORGEOUS on you! I'm so happy that I was able to get you two reunited! <3

As you said, nail polish isn't just nail polish for all of us, it is memories, just like a certain smell, a certain, movie, etc, etc.

I'm getting all teary-eyed! SHHH! Don't tell anyone, I DO have a reputation to live up to! ;)

  2. So cool!! I love old black label OPIs, and even better if it has a story behind it!! My most nostalgic OPI is My Throne For a Cranberry Scone, it was the first polish I bought with my firsta paycheck from my first real job back in the day =)

  9. I love this story! I totally understand what you mean; I used to ditch polish all the time back in the day. I wish I had some colors from this collection I could send your way, but sadly, I don't even think I knew what OPI was back then :/

    1. Aw, you are so sweet Amanda! And, yes- I remember as recent as 2009 throwing stuff away because I "hadn't used it in awhile". Psht. Obvs, the true hoarder inside me has reared it's head, because that would NEVER happen now!

  10. Awwww, what a cute story behind this polish! Thanks for sharing it! I threw out some of my polishes when I was younger too (so stupid of me!!) and I really regret that I tossed some of the old Sally Hansen chrome polishes. I had no idea back then how awesome they really were!
