Mariah Carey by OPI Collection for Spring 2013 featuring Liquid Sand Lacquers (Pictures, Swatches, Review)

I'm very excited to share today's photos with you! OPI has collaborated with superstar Mariah Carey for a unique and beautiful collection of 8 nail lacquers, each as unique and multifaceted as Mariah herself.

Confession time: I am a Mariah fan, and it goes way back to the early 90's. Mariah's self titled debut album came out in 1990, which made me 11 at the time. For my birthday that year, I requested the cassette tape and I would wear my Walkman while riding my bike around my neighborhood, singing along to Vision Of Love, Someday, Love Takes Time, and I Don't Wanna Cry. I also may or may not have written and directed my siblings in a Mariah-themed musical, the venue- my parent's basement. Don't judge. I was a weird 11yr old.

Mariah Carey OPI Collection

First, let's get a little Mariah playing to get you in the mood. This one is one of my recent (last few years) favs- "Obsessed":

Does this woman even age? I love her makeup in that video!

So lets get this started with the new "Liquid Sand" lacquers in the collection. This is a new type of nail polish technology from OPI, debuting in this collection for the first time. This effect-type polish says it "dries to a textured matte finish infused with reflective glints of light".  To be honest, I thought I was not going to dig these at all. I have texture "issues" when it comes to my nails- I don't like feeling anything on them. The thing that saved these for me is two-fold: first, the texture is not bad. Not scratchy or overly chunky. You can definitely feel more grit than a 'normal' creme polish, but there aren't jagged shards waiting to snag your sweater (<<what I pictured).  Secondly, these colors are BEAUTIFUL.  Just look and see what I mean:

This first one is Get Your Number. This looks like your blue nails were dipped into sparkly sugar! In fact, most of these reminded me of candy.  3 layers shown here:

Of course I had to see what these looked like all shined up, so here is Get Your Number with 2 layers of topcoat:

Next is The Impossible, a strawberry jam liquid sand color with different sized glitters (and some stars too!) 3 layers:
OPI The Impossible

And The Impossible with 2 layers of topcoat:

Then we have Can't Let Go, a purple glitter liquid sand that once again reminds me of candy and sugar. Grape candy! 3 layers:

And Can't Let Go with 2 layers of topcoat:

Then we have my favorite from this half, Stay The Night. Holy hell, this is a stunner and super unique! The black 'sand' base dries down to a matte finish, but the bright reddish-pink glitters sparkle through. Very reminiscent of embers glowing in a campfire once you put it out and it's still in that smoldering phase. Yes, 'smoldering' is the perfect word for this!! 3 layers:

Next, we'll move onto the 'regular' half of this collection!
Anti Bleak is a creamy plum beaut with fantastic coverage. I could almost get away with one layer of this. So shiny! 2 layers:
OPI Anti Bleak

Then there's Sprung, a bronze/golden/pink shimmer polish. This was so cool and reminded me of a Spring version of last year's "Warm & Fozzie" (OPI's Muppets Collection). 3 layers:
OPI Sprung

Next is my 2nd favorite, A Butterfly Moment. Nude! Pink! Shimmer!  Everything I love in a neutral polish!  2 layers:
OPI A Butterfly Moment

Lastly, we have the glitter polish Pink Yet Lavender, a clear based polish with pink hex glitters and teeny iridescent holographic lavender glitters. 1 layer shown on top of A Butterfly Moment. I'm in complete neutral/glitter polish love with this combo:

In Conclusion: This collection is innovative and fun.  I had zero expectations for the Liquid Sand and I ended up really loving them, and because of the colors, I don't mind some texture.

  1. Your swatches of these are gorgeous! I feel the need to buy Stay The Night. :)

    1. Thanks Katherine! You definitely need Stay the Night!! It would look so great on you!

  2. Maribeth that was me as a child too LOL. MC was MOST DEF my idol and i lived and breathed for her from the age of 6... she's not my fav anymore but I will always have a soft spot for her. (do love obsessed tho)

anyway this collection is awesome - only picked up the sands but i looov them all. great swatch pics!

    1. See, I knew we were friends for a reason ;-) Hahaha I can't wait to see the 'sands' on you!

  3. Love your swatches! I thought I wouldn't be interested in this collection but your swatches are giving me second thoughts. (I love MC too!)

  4. Maribeth, these look *amazing*! Get Your Number and Stay the Night WILL be mine. ;)

  5. Wow, GREAT reviews!! I agree, I'm in glitter/nude polish love with the Pink Yet Lavender/Butterfly Moment combo as well. Just so ladylike and pretty!

  6. Gorgeous swatches, my friend! Can you believe that I received this collection weeks ago and STILL haven't had time to swatch it all yet? Bad blogger, Eugenia....

'Stay the Night' is the only shade I've worn as a full mani - 3 times already! I never, ever do that but this one is just drop dead stunning!

  7. I'm still unsure how I feel about the liquid sand :/ Mainly because I saw them swatched in a store and thought eh. But maybe they were a tad off looking because people have been touching them :P

  8. Ahh! The liquid sand glitters are so cool. I need The Impossible for sure!

  9. I'm excited to try some of the Liquid Sand polishes, they are so neat! Especially Get Your Number, it is beautiful with or without topcoat!!

  10. I absolutely love your swatches but this whole collection is a bust for me. It just feels dated and trying too hard. Just like Ms. Carey...

  11. I like this collection. I love the liquid sand so much!

  12. I'm really glad I came across this review! I was thinking about buying the Liquid Sand colors but the swatches at Ulta looked so textured that I was afraid to get them. After reading your review I'm definitely getting one! I'm wearing Sprung right now and I absolutely love it. The longer you wear it, the more pink it gets. One question...do you know if there is a special technique for removing the sand colors?

    1. I'm so glad you are going to try the liquid sand- I think you will really be very surprised with them! Removal was pretty easy. I'd say it's equivalent to that of a regular glitter polish- not bad at all :)

  13. I seen them and then didn't buy any because I didn't know how I would like the liquid sand...still don't know how I feel but I might get one just to try out :)

  14. I'm wearing three coats of stay the night with two coats of clear over that. I just love this color. I think I like these better with the clear coat. My daughter and I have three of the four sands (we don't have the blue yet) and I think stay the night is by far my fav. These are just a nice change from regular polish. Thanks for your beautiful swatches, they are what made me buy them. The swatches at beauty supply were not a good representation.

    1. I'm so glad you gave them a chance! You definitely have to see them in person to really appreciate how cool they are! Stay the night is in the running for my fav polish of 2013 already- it's just so gorgeous!
